Concrete vs Mortar: What's the Difference and When to Use Each
Concrete contains cement, sand, AND coarse aggregate, and is used for structural work (foundations, slabs, columns) that needs to bear load. Mortar contains only cement and sand (no coarse aggregate), and is used for binding masonry units together and for plastering — the two aren't interchangeable, and mixing them up wastes both material and structural strength.

Masonry unit quantity comes from dividing the wall's volume by each unit's effective volume — including its share of the mortar joint on each side — plus a wastage allowance, and switching from standard bricks to larger AAC blocks for the identical wall can cut the unit count by roughly 8x, since each block simply displaces far more volume than a brick does.
