How Energy Units Like Joules, Calories, and kWh Are Converted

Every energy unit converts to another the same way — multiply by how many joules one unit represents, then divide by how many joules the target unit represents — with joules acting as the common reference point behind every conversion.

A worked example: 1 kilocalorie to joules

1 kilocalorie converts to exactly 4,184 joules — the thermochemical definition (1 calorie = 4.184 J exactly) scaled up by 1,000 for the "kilo" prefix.

The formula: convert through joules

Converted value = amount × (from-unit-to-joules factor) ÷ (to-unit-to-joules factor). Every unit has a fixed joules-equivalent, so converting between any two of them is really two conversions chained through joules as the common middle step, even when the joules figure itself never appears in the result.

A bigger jump: 1 kilowatt-hour to joules

1 kWh converts to exactly 3,600,000 joules — 1,000 watts sustained for 3,600 seconds (one hour), which is exactly what "kilowatt-hour" describes: a rate of energy use multiplied by a duration.

A US-market unit: 1 BTU to kilojoules

1 BTU (British Thermal Unit), commonly seen on air conditioner and heater ratings, converts to 1.055056 kJ — a much smaller unit than the kWh, reflecting BTU's use for describing appliance capacity rather than a full hour's energy consumption.

Why food labels use "Calories" but this converter calls it kcal

A food label's capital-C "Calorie" is actually 1 kilocalorie (1,000 small calories) — this converter's "kcal" unit is exactly what a nutrition label means by "Calories," while the lowercase "cal" option is the smaller scientific unit, 1,000 times less.
